about

The ancient currents of rivers continue to carry and connect both people and matter. Rivers give birth to stories and music, and sometimes it can happen that when we indulge in listening, their narration begins to ripple inside of us.
The audio work Joki puhuu began its first circulation at an event in the Arkhangelsk region We here in 2019, where artists from different fields gathered to study environmental and social phenomena through art. Katya Kalyuzhnaya, Maxim Sergeev and Outi Rossi set up a sound laboratory, and began to study the acoustics of the river that gave birth to the village around it and other water sounds. The flow of the river in the landscape that once gave birth to a village around it, brought the artists of the piece to face each other too. We started looking for ways to listen to the stories that the river might have for us to tell.
The development of the first part of the audio work continued in Moscow and Helsinki, and generated a web page that invites everyone to record river speech and river traditions around the world.
The first part expanded into a three-part audio work for the Broadcasting Company YLE in Maxim Sergeev’s studio in Moscow in the spring of 2021. The flow of the audio work was created with water and speech recordings by a big group of people from all over the world interested in river dialogue and traditions. in addition to Finnish and Russian languages the work includes Hungarian, Khanty, Udmurt and Karelian languages.
The voice of the river has continued to flow, creating new encounters and
growing ravines of events and works of art. We hope you enjoy our work, and we warmly invite you to share your river experiences on the Voice of the river website: voiceoftheriver.tilda.ws
